Message from the Minister,
Ministry of Health & Indigenous Medicine

I would like to congratulate the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute (BMARI) for taking initiative to organize and launch this website which can serve as a platform for the institute to connect with the world.

Sri Lanka, from ancient times had a tradition of considering people’s health as a priority concern and there was a developed system of health based on indigenous medicine with strong roots.

Although with foreign invasions there was a decline and breakdown of the ancient systems of Medicine, the resurgence of indigenous medicine system (IMS) enriched with Traditional medicine, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homeopathy, Acupuncture etc. is a testimony to prove its importance and recognition of the people towards the indigenous medicine.

Today the development of science and technology, in particular the application of electronics and Information Communication Technology has < revolutionized modern health systems and widened the scope of their services. Consequently, it has also put pressure on the indigenous medicine system based health sector and expectations from the IMS have become more and deeper. The government is keen on strengthening research wing of the IMS thereby supporting continuous development and improvement of the IM sector.

I strongly believe that this web site would be of much use for improving the communication among policy makers, researchers, scientists, students, and viewers of different caliber to share the views and ideas and to make positive comments. I also wish to request the viewers to give their views on our outreach services, research outcomes etc.

Message from the Director
Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute

The Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute (BMARI) was established with the prime objective of promoting the Researach and Development culture for the improvement of Indigenous medicine system along with other related areas. Compared with the previous website, the present one has wider scope and many dimensions for connecting to the world. Health is vital for total development of personality and therefore the BMARI intends to set up several strategic approaches in ensuring a satisfactory healthcare system to the country. One of the strategies is to establish a systematic tool to make the people aware on health issues thereby encourage them for preventive health. On the other hand, there is no proactive website dedicated to manage active dialogues among related participants. With the new website, we expect a larger participation of contributors representing a wide spectrum of fields of Indigenous Medicine Systems and related areas, who are affiliated to Academic and R & D institutions of both state and private sectors.

Research is essential to economic growth, imperative to knowledge related to the professions and excellence and intrinsic to the development of the community. The intended holistic approach emphasizes the integration, connection, co-operation and application of research with a focus on an interdisciplinary approach of various but related scientific areas. We, the web committee, look forward to combine cutting-edge research and ideas with a community-oriented mission and to reach national and international audience for disseminating new and essential knowledge related to indigenous medicine systems.

I take this opportunity to thank, in advance, all those who contributed and those who continue supporting the smooth function of the website making it a successful and meaningful one.

Prof. K.K.D.S.Ranaweera,
Director/BMARI
